The Whyte G160S that we tried, is built with a shock: Rock Shox Monarch R debonair, maybe looks a bit too basic for this kind of bike. For sure wouldn’t be bad to have an upgrade to the Rock Shox Monarch RL with a lock out from its brand, which would avoid the rocking uphill and would attract new buyers, without an excessive extra cost.
On the other side downhill it doesn’t work bad at all, the same as its “colleague” the Rock Shox Yari. Both fulfil their role for the majority of enduro and mountain bike users. Basically we only found one small negative aspect since the first day, and we say negative to say something really minor, because we can fix it with just €15 and is the lack of progresivity, which is verified since the first climb, with sag adjusted at the 30% and later at 25% with the same results.
We take this opportunity to realize this really simple tutorial, to help those who has the same problem to solve it and for those who don’t dare to try, to keep in touch with us to make it for them.
1º Desmount the shock: In this case is a bolt Torx T25 in the upper part and another of 8mm and 10mm in the lower part.
2º It’s very important to quit all the air from the shock. Don’t forget it!!!
3º We have now to quit the O-Ring which keeps in its place the airlock Debonair, is very easy, or you can use a hook, risking to ruin the O-Ring and with the consequence of buying a new one or as in the picture you can pressure from the lower part until overhang from the top, where you will benefit from pulling it out.
4º After pulling you should keep with something like this. You just need to finish to pull and remove both the O-Ring and the red O-Ring of reference for the SAG.
5º It will keep something like this.The shock has 2 exits, in this case we don’t go to degrease it and clean it, just in the ending we will lubricate it even more.
6º Let’s get now the tokens, spacers, reducers O-Rings or as you want to call them and we decide which ones we want to mount, the bag has 9 inside, I weight 75kg and I want to have much more progressivity than how it comes usually so I start with 6.
7º We put it closer to the valve, careful to not put it close to the retainer because this is the other airlock and wouldn’t work properly. We oil everthing good, the spacer, the O-Rings.. and let’s close it in the opposite way of how we did it at the beginning without forgetting the red O-Ring.
8º At the end we inflate at the needed pressure, we mount the shock we make it work few times softly to compensate the airlocks, the pression in this moment will go down around 10 or 15 psi, we put back the bomb and we’ll give it the equivalent pressure. For my weight and way of conduction I’ll try with 160 psi.
